Why I Blog

I’m following a couple of other writers in this vast expanse of a blogosphere and recently have been hearing a lot of post-idea generators that suggest telling your readers about why you started your blog. I think I make that pretty clear with each post as I sign off by sending my love to my three favorite kids (uh, kids-slash-young-adults… sorry), and there’s also The About Page (there’s a link to The About Page right beneath the header photo at the top of the page). I’m here to keep [rather one-sided] contact with you and keep you updated on what goes on in my life—whether it’s just random stuff that’s going on, or insight I’ve gained from my experiences, or something in between.

(Side note: I am also aware that I have other readers besides the Petrella ones and I’d like to acknowledge you, too! I’m trying to maintain a balance between making my posts enjoyable for a broad audience while maintaining the integrity of my original intentions. I am grateful for all of your support.)

But at the same time, the reasons I blog have evolved and developed a lot over the past school year. You could say that it started out solely for that first reason, but it has become a bit more for me as I’ve put more time into it and grown rather attached.

I’m always looking for something to write to you guys about, whether it’s the small things or something I’ve learned or a pattern that is persisting in my daily life. I use it to regularly reflect on what’s happening in my life and see if there’s anything I could learn or anything I am learning from my current situation. It lets me center myself and put some of my thoughts onto paper (so to speak). Looking back at posts from the fall and even earlier this semester makes me feel like I’ve grown a lot as a person, in terms of my mindset and maturity, and what I know about myself. I also hope that I’ve grown as a writer, but I’m not sure of how accurate my assessment of that type of development would be.

(Heh… “type”… See what I did there?)

And every few days, whether I have any great ideas or not, I’ll open up a blank Word document and start writing because it’s nice to take a break from all the hectic busyness of daily college life every once in a while to focus on doing something that is calming and enjoyable and mine.
